Abstract:

The work at hand contributes to the eld of mesh generation for the FE simulation of flow and transport processes in fractured porous media based on discrete models. The latter are applied if the spatial distribution of processes is of interest. Consequently, the FE mesh needs to represent complex geometries and answer both the space-dependent character of the considered equations and the numerical requirements at the discontinuity. Therefore the methods for mesh generation should be able to treat arbitrary polyhedrally composed geometries, guarantee boundary smoothness, other different types of elements and work on both lower-dimensional and equidimensional meshes. The approach comprises an initial domain decomposition { but this time into subdomains with identical requirements concerning the grid's dimension, density and structuredness, and a subsequent separate, individual meshing. The rough decomposition leads to 2D fractures, the portion of the matrix that is close to the fracture, so-called skin, and the remaining, so-called core. The method thereby oers the simulation on selected parts of the domain: In addition to the 2.5D model (comprising the 2D fractures only) it also oers a 2.75D model (adding the skin blocks). The fine decomposition leads to the distinct blocks that are meshed following the respective requirements, that force their separation, as well as the additional requirement of conformity at the generated internal boundaries. The meshing methods applied on this scale vary from algebraic meshing to Delaunay with an intermediate Sweeping method joining both. In order to achieve valid meshes, geometrical conditions are applied to the decomposition that are expressed via a Simplex algorithm. The 2.75D model is exemplarily veried by analyzing the dependence of a model error on the most important parameters velocity and dispersivity. Subsequently, the method is applied on a range of case studies showing the following results. 2.75D modeling is applicable simulating heat transport, in particular in steady state problems. It also improves the simulation of fracture networks that contain dead end structures. Furthermore, the approach based on a topology analysis oers the meshing of dolerite dykes as an example of more complex polyhedrally bounded geometries. Finally, the different element types provided are shown together with their infuence on mesh quality.
